'Boyhood,' 'Imitation Game,' 'Whiplash' Among Eddie Nominees for Editing

In nine of the past 12 years, the winner of American Cinema Editors' best edited dramatic feature category went on to win the Oscar in editing

American Sniper, Boyhood, Gone Girl, The Imitation Game, Nightcrawler and Whiplash were nominated for the American Cinema Editors’ Eddie Award for best edited dramatic feature. There are six nominees instead of the usual five due to a tie, only the second time this has occurred in Eddies history.

In the category for feature editing, comedy or musical, ACE members nominated Birdman, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Guardians of the Galaxy, Inherent Vice and Into the Woods.

It should be noted that in nine of the past 12 years, the winner of the best edited dramatic feature category has gone on to win the Oscar in editing. Once in that period, it went to the winner in the comedy or musical category (Chicago).

For seven of the past 12 Eddie Awards shows, the film that won either the dramatic or comedy/musical ACE categories went on to win the Academy Award for best picture. No film has won best picture at the Oscars without also having received at least a best editing nomination from ACE since Ordinary People in 1981. That’s not a good sign for best picture hopefuls such as Unbroken, Selma and The Theory of Everything, which didn’t make the cut for this year’s Eddies.

This year’s list of nominees for dramatic feature includes several past Oscar winners, as well as a notable newcomer. Imitation Game editor William Goldenberg won an Oscar for editing Argo in 2012. Gone Girl editor Kirk Baxter previously earned Oscars for The Social Network and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (both with co-editor Angus Wall). Clint Eastwood’s longtime editor Joel Cox — who won an Oscar for Unforgiven — and Oscar nominee Gary Roach are back in the race with American Sniper. Meanwhile, first-time nominee Tom Cross has turned some heads with his work on indie Whiplash, only his third feature as an editor. This is the second Eddie nomination for Boyhood editor Sandra Adair and Nightcrawler cutter John Gilroy.

The comedy and musical feature category includes two previous Oscar winners. Birdman editor Stephen Mirrione — who won an Oscar for Traffic, is nominated with co-editor and Oscar nominee Douglas Crise. And Hughes Winborne, who won an Oscar for cutting Crash, is nominated for Guardians with Fred Raskin and Craig Wood.

Also revealed in Friday’s announcement is that Big Hero 6, The Boxtrolls and The Lego Movie will compete for best edited animated feature. This category was added in 2010 and each year, its winner has mirrored the eventual winner of the Oscar for best animated feature.

ACE's best edited documentary category includes two shortlisted Oscar hopefuls, Citizenfour and Finding Vivian Maier.
