Camera maker Arri has completed development of the Alexa SXT cameras (Super Xtended Technology), which will be offered as an upgrade to models of its widely used Alexas XT digital cinematography cameras, shipped in 2015 and 2016.

Alexa cameras are widely used in film and TV production, such as on The Revenant, Captain America: Civil War and Sully.

In addition to the originally promised upgrade program of a free-of-charge upgrade to SXT in Arri’s Munich headquarters, the company has equipped its service stations in London, Los Angeles, New York, Beijing, Hong Kong and Mumbai to perform the upgrade. For those who received their XT camera before 2015, a paid-for upgrade option to a full SXT is available.

While keeping the sensor and user interface of the original Alexa design, the capabilities of Alexa SXT cameras (now Alexa SXT EV, Alexa SXT Plus and ALEXA SXT Studio) have been extended. It’s equipped with certain electronics and image processing of the Alexa 65 large format camera. Arri reported that the SXT cameras can manage additional recording formats and handle color space conversions to Rec 2020 in real time.

While images recorded with Alexa have been high dynamic range since the camera's introduction in 2010, it is now possible to also monitor in HDR, the company said.
