CinemaCon: 'Guardians of the Galaxy,' 'Edge of Tomorrow' on Dolby Atmos Slate
"How to Train Your Dragon 2" and "The Avengers: Age of Ultron" are also among the upcoming titles that will be released in the immersive sound format.
As CinemaCon opens at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Dolby reports that the number of features that have been mixed and released -- or are scheduled to be -- in Dolby Atmos has surpassed 100 titles since the immersive sound format was launched in spring 2012.
Among the latest to be announced are Disney and Marvel’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron (May 1) and Guardians of the Galaxy (August 1); Disney’s Million Dollar Arm (May 16); DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon 2 (June 13): Lionsgate’s The Expendables 3 (August 15); Paramount's Transformers: Age of Extinction; and Warner Bros.’ Transcendence (April 17) and Edge of Tomorrow (June 6). A list of Atmos titles can be found here.
Dolby additionally said it has inked a deal with Cinemaxx, a new exhibitor under Indonesia’s Lippo Group, which will install Dolby Atmos in 30 of its cinema auditoriums by the end of May, and a total of 100 in the coming years. An estimated 450 Atmos systems are currently installed in theaters worldwide, and Dolby now has commitments to grow that number to at least 600 screens.
For the second year in a row, Dolby has temporarily equipped the Colosseum theater at Caesars Palace with Atmos, which will be used during CinemaCon for Disney’s screening of Million Dollar Arm as well as portions of the slate presentations from Sony, Fox, Warner Bros. and Disney.
