CinemaCon: 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Trailer, Remastered in Dolby Vision, Debuts
The trailer of JJ. Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens debuted in Dolby Vision — Dolby’s new-fangled format offering high dynamic range (HDR), greater contrast and and a wider color gamut — Wednesday at CinemaCon, and it appears that a Dolby Vision release will follow.
Dolby Vision was also used for a dazzling clip from Joe Kosinski's Tron that was remastered in Dolby Vision and 3D. Kosinski will be directing a sequel, which is currently in preproduction.
The Hollywood Reporter previously reported that whispers and speculation suggest that both Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Kosiniski’s upcoming Tron sequel will be released in Dolby Vision.
The Star Wars trailer and Tron clip were screened in Dolby Vision during a technical presentation, following the preview screening of Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out in Dolby Vision. Inside Out and Disney's Tomorrowland, for which a clip was also previewed in Dolby Vision, will be the first movies released in the format.
Inside Out director Pete Docter, producer Jonas Rivera, director of photography Kim White and production designer Ralph Eggleston were on hand to discuss their experience with Dolby Vision. Docter commented, “it gave us another tool to play with to emphasize emotion.”
During its technical presentation, Dolby also screened a clip of Paul Feig’s upcoming Spy, remastered in Dolby Vision. The director was on hand, giving it high marks are remarking that it could be a “gold mine” for his upcoming Ghostbusters in that it could bring out the luminosity of the ghosts.
Kosinski is already a fan of Dolby Vision, and has stated that he’s more excited about HDR — which offers a wider range between the blackest blacks and whitest whites — than features such as 3D or high frame rates. A clip from his Oblivion was remastered in Dolby Vision and used for demonstrations at CES 2014 when Dolby Vision was unveiled for home entertainment.
A clip from Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness was previously used in early Dolby Vision cinema presentations for studio execs and other stakeholders. Abrams' Bad Robot Productions already uses the SGO’s Mistika system, a color grading and postproduction system that supports Dolby Vision, in house.
Dolby installed Dolby Vision projection and its immersive sound system, Dolby Atmos, in Caesars’ Palace’s Colosseum for the CinemaCon presentations. With limited setup time due to the Colosseum’s performance schedule, the company actually rented a warehouse on the Las Vegas strip where it pre-built most of the system and did testing and calibration. It was moved the Colosseum and installed late last week.
The bigger play for Dolby is the introduction of a premium branded cinema system, Dolby Cinema, which includes Dolby Vision projection, Dolby Atmos sound and design elements including a 7 ft. video wall entrance and special fabric walls that conceal audio speakers. Disney has also announced that its Jon Favreau-directed The Jungle Book is scheduled to get a Dolby Cinema release when it opens in 2016.
