Dolby is expanding its Dolby Cinema footprint with a deal with Cineplexx, which plans to open six locations in Austria. Dolby Cinema is a premium, large-format theater experience that combines the Dolby Vision high-dynamic laser projection system with Dolby Atmos immersive sound.

Cineplexx intends to open two Dolby Cinema sites later this year, with the first to be located in Linz. Additional Dolby Cinema sites are planned to open at major Cineplexx locations across Austria in 2016 and 2017.

“We are very pleased about this collaboration with Dolby,” said Christian Langhammer, CEO of Cineplexx Austria. “Cineplexx will be the first cinema chain in the German-speaking region to offer Dolby Cinema. We will boost the moviegoing experience to the next level."

Presently, roughly 10 theater auditoriums worldwide support Dolby Cinema or Dolby Vision projection, plus Dolby Cinema at AMC Prime installations in the U.S. have started, with roughly 100 expected to be in place by 2024.

The rollout is really just getting underway, Disney’s Tomorrowland, which opened in May, was the first theatrical release in Dolby Vision, followed closely by Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out and Warner’s San Andreas. On Monday, The Hollywood Reporter reported that upcoming titles include Paramount's Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation.
