To help satisfy anxious fans until the Dec. 18 theatrical release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Lucasfilm and Disney Interactive have launched a free Star Wars app.

Available for iOS and Android devices, the app will provide news, videos, social updates and interactivity including an augmented reality camera feature with 3D characters. It will be featured this week at Lucasfilm’s San Diego Comic-Con booth.

Interactive features include "Force Trainer," which allows users to virtually grab a lightsaber and duel a training remote (as in Star Wars A New Hope). With another tool, take a Star Wars selfie, in costumes such as Princess Leia.

News includes posts from the official Star Wars web site as well as channels on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Tumblr, and Google+. Videos include trailers and ‘making-of’ clips.

There's also a soundboard with which to play clips and sound effects from the films; 'This day in Star Wars history' text; and Star Wars themed weather forecasts. Users can customize the app with light side, dark side, or droid interfaces.

A 'Star Wars ID' feature lets users choose an avatar and build a connected profile.
