'Gravity' Tops 3D Society Awards With Four Wins
"Frozen" wins a pair of trophies in animation; "Stalingrad" collects jury prize; and "Breaking Bad" and "Space" earn debut awards for 4K production.
Gravity topped the International 3D & Advanced Imaging Society's Creative Arts Awards, winning Lumiere trophies for best live action 3D feature, best stereography in a live action film, best 3D scene of the year and best 2D to 3D conversion.
Also Tuesday at Warner Bros., Disney's Frozen was the big winner in animation, earning a pair of awards for best animated 3D feature and best stereography in an animated film.
Russia's Stalingrad (which is scheduled for a Feb. 28 release in the U.S.) received the Society's Jury Prize for outstanding 3D artistic achievement.
Additionally winners include Metallica Through the Never, which picked up the award for 3D documentary; Oscar-nominated Disney short Get a Horse, which collected the trophy for 3D short subject; and Oscar-nominated short Mr. Hublot from Zeilt Productions, Luxenbourg, which was honored for best international animated 3D short.
Additional winners in the international categories included productions from Sky3D in the U.K. and CCTV in China.
In new categories for advanced imaging, the Society honored two programs for their use of 4K: 3net's Space: Unraveling the Cosmos and the remastered 4K version of Breaking Bad.
Also during the ceremony, DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg received the Society's Harold Lloyd Filmmaker Award, which was presented by Suzanne Lloyd and Society co-chair Tom Cosgrove, CEO of 3net Studios.
Pixar Animation Studios was honored with the Sir Charles Wheatstone Award.
And the Century Award was presented to 3Ality Technica and its founder and CEO Steve Schklair. 3Ality's 3D systems have been used on productions including The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, The Great Gatsby, U2 3D and Stalingrad.
