Honors and Hires: Steven Spielberg Establishing USC Endowed Chair in Editing to Honor Michael Kahn
Also this week, "Benjamin Button" VFX supervisor Eric Barba was promoted at Digital Domain.
This column in THR’s Behind the Screen blog -- which runs on Fridays -- covers members of the crafts and technology community who have been honored, hired, signed or have otherwise made news.
VFX supervisor Eric Barba, who won an Academy Award for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, has been promoted to chief creative officer and senior visual effects supervisor at Digital Domain “3.0.” A 17-year Digital Domain veteran, he will also continue to work on individual feature films as a VFX supervisor, as well as on commercials as a VFX supervisor and director. Barba -- whose credits also include Oblivion, Tron: Legacy and Girl with the Dragon Tattoo -- reports to CEO Daniel Seah. In making the announcement, Digital Domain included a quote from David Fincher that said: “Finally! Eric Barba is the reason Digital Domain is on my list of the top three visual effects companies in the world.”
Steven Spielberg is establishing an Endowed Chair in Editing to honor his longtime editor Michael Kahn (pictured) at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. Working with Spielberg, Kahn won Oscars for editing Saving Private Ryan, Schindler’s List and Raiders of the Lost Ark. The first chairholder will be editor Norman Hollyn (Heathers, The Cotton Club and Oliver Stone’s Wild Palms), who is a professor and head of the editing track at the school. A dedication and installation is scheduled to take place this month.
The USC School of Cinematic Arts will honor James Burrows (Cheers, Friends, The Big Bang Theory) at the Comedy@SCA Festival, which runs Nov. 9-10 at the Cinematic Arts complex. The festival will include screenings and panel discussions, with guests including Betty White, Conan O’Brien, Greg Daniels and Lisa Kudrow. Admission to all events is free and open to the public, but RSVP is required. For details, check http://cinema.usc.edu/ComedyFestival2
