'Midnight Rider' Accident: Sarah Jones Remembered at Camera Operators Awards (Video)

The tribute comes one day after hundreds participated in a candlelight walk and memorial for the late camera assistant.

The Society of Camera Operators paid tribute to Sarah Jones Saturday, making her an honorary associate member during its annual Lifetime Achievement Awards, held at the Skirball Cultural Center. Jones' parents, Richard and Elizabeth Jones, were among the 500 guests in attendance.

Richard Jones received a standing ovation before speaking to the audience about his daughter, the 27-year-old camera assistant who was killed Feb. 20 while on location in Georgia.

"I'm just representing Sarah," he said. "I know she is looking down with a smile. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and I hope it lives on."

David Frederick, SOC vice president and awards executive producer, urged attendees to sign a pledge set up to encourage on-set safety. Then, Jones' parents accepted an honorary associate membership into the SOC for their daughter, presented in the form of a plaque.

Jones was killed when she was struck by a train in Wayne County, Ga., while filming the Gregg Allman biopic Midnight Rider. Multiple investigations are underway, including one by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Georgia law enforcement authorities are treating the investigation into Jones’ death as a negligent homicide.

On Friday, the International Cinematographers Guild held a candlelight walk and memorial for Jones. Participants emphasized that safety must be a top priority, using the motto "Never Forget; Never Again."

ICG president Steven Poster and ICG national executive director Bruce Doering were also in attendance at the SOC Awards.
