'Midnight Rider' Death: Sarah Jones Tribute Planned for Camera Operators Awards
The Society of Camera Operators will present a tribute to Sarah Jones -- the 27-year-old camera assistant who was recently killed in an accident while filming Midnight Rider -- during the SOC Lifetime Achievement Awards on March 8 at the Skirball Cultural Center.
"The SOC considers Sarah one of our own and will be including her as an Associate Member based on her work to date. Her loss will be an inspiration to the production community for safety on the set at all times," said Dave Frederick, SOC awards chairman, in a statement provided to The Hollywood Reporter. “The segment will celebrate her joy of life and work as we witness the outpouring of support on social media from her 'set families,' including the Slates ror Sarah Facebook page with over 65,000 likes and growing every day."
Jones was also remembered during the Academy Awards. Following the "In Memoriam" segment, her name was added to the end of the tribute in a banner that flashed on TV broadcasts.
She was killed Feb. 20 when she was struck by a train in Wayne, County, Ga., while filming Midnight Rider, a Gregg Allman biopic. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into the accident, which also left seven other crewmembers injured.
