'Rogue One,' 'The Revenant' Help Bolster Use of ARRI Alexa 65 Camera

The large-format 6K resolution cinema camera was also tapped for movies including 'Doctor Strange' and 'Live by Night.'

Last January, camera maker ARRI started to roll out the first production models of its Alexa 65 — a large-format, 6K resolution model of ARRI's popular Alexa digital cinematography camera. It had a good first year, already having been used on some of the most high profile productions and by numerous leading cinematographers.

Among them: roughly 40 percent of The Revenant, lensed by Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki (who won back-to-back Academy Awards in 2014 and 2015 for Gravity and Birdman); and the main unit of Ben Affleck’s upcoming Live by Night, with three-time Oscar-winning cinematographer Robert Richardson (who recently lensed The Hateful Eight).

The camera also was used by Oscar winner Robert Elswit for the underwater sequence in Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation, as well as by Hoyte van Hoytema for select sequences in Spectre.

The Alexa 65 was employed by the main units on upcoming films including: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, cinematographer Greig Fraser; Doctor Strange, Ben Davis; The Great Wall, Stuart Dryburgh; The Crowd, Darius Khondji; Passengers, Rodriego Prieto; War for the Planet of the Apes, Michael Seresin; and Sully, Tom Stern.

Other cinematographers who used the Alexa 65 for select sequences of upcoming productions include Oscar winner Anthony Dod Mantle, for Snowden; Florian Ballhaus, for Allegant; Julio Macat, The Boss; and Phedon Papamichael, The Huntsman.

The Alexa 65 has a 65mm CMOS sensor and 14 stops of dynamic range. It weighs 10.5 kg (a bit larger and heavier than the existing Alexa) and is available for rental only through ARRI Rental.
