Sony to Open Digital Motion Picture Center at Pinewood Studios
Slated to open in late September, the facility will feature training and workflows for the company's F65, F55 and F5 4K cameras.
Following the 2012 launch of its Digital Motion Picture Center on Sony Pictures’ Culver City lot, Sony is aiming to support the European market with a similar facility that will housed at Pinewood Studios in the U.K.
Scheduled to open in late September, the facility will offer training and information about Sony’s latest cameras including the F65, F55 and F5 4K models, combined with related workflows from industry partners. It will also incorporate 4K and HD displays for viewing pictures in professional or home environments.
The consumer electronics industry is pushing Ultra HD TVs, but 4K content availability is very limited (and distribution also needs to be worked out). Sony has started to build a 4K library, using the format for projects including Sony’s After Earth and the upcoming Michael J. Fox Show.
Cinematographers, film crews (those from rental and postproduction facilities) and freelancers will be invited to drop in at the new center or sign up for scheduled courses.
The center will also play a role in helping Sony learn about user requirements to drive product development. “It is critical for Sony’s future success that we listen to key figures in the industry and take their input,” explained Katsunori Yamanouchi, vp of Sony Professional Solutions Europe.
