Vitec Group Enters the Drone Business With Paralinx Acquisition

The Vitec Group — whose camera support and accessory brands include Anton/Bauer, Bexel, Litepanels, O'Connor and Sachtler — is getting into the drone business with the acquisition of Paralinx, a privately owned California company that develops wireless video systems for uses including operation of movie cameras that are mounted on drones. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

With the Federal Aviation Administration beginning to loosen restrictions on the use of unmanned aerial systems, or drones, for filmmaking in U.S. airspace, Hollywood has been taking a keen interest in the technology. Proponents — including Paralinx founders and International Cinematographers Guild members Dan Kanes and Greg Smokler — believe the use of these systems can bring new creative options to filmmaking, while making aerial shots more cost effective compared with using a helicopter.

With the acquisition, Paralinx will be incorporated into the Vitec Group's Videocom creative services unit, which also includes Teradek, which makes wireless video systems aimed at broadcasting, and SmallHD, which develops portable monitors.
