With the Federal Aviation Administration beginning to loosen restrictions on the use of unmanned aerial systems, or drones, for filmmaking in U.S. airspace, Hollywood has been taking a keen interest in the technology. Proponents — including Paralinx founders and International Cinematographers Guild members Dan Kanes and Greg Smokler — believe the use of these systems can bring new creative options to filmmaking, while making aerial shots more cost effective compared with using a helicopter.
With the acquisition, Paralinx will be incorporated into the Vitec Group's Videocom creative services unit, which also includes Teradek, which makes wireless video systems aimed at broadcasting, and SmallHD, which develops portable monitors.
