ABC developing 'Awkward Family Photos' into series
ABC is developing some Awkward Family Photos.
In the latest viral online sensation to land a broadcast comedy deal, the concept behind the popular blog and book has been picked up at the network.
Sony Pictures TV is producing the project for ABC in a script-with-penalty deal.
Contractually, ABC's show will be based upon the "Awkward Family Photos" book, though the print version and year-old Web site were both created by Mike Bender and Doug Chernack and contain the same content -- funny, embarrassing and, yes, awkward family portraits that have been submitted by readers.
How the concept will translate to series TV is still unclear.
CBS famously managed to convert the Twitter feed "$#*! My Dad Says" into a TV show this fall, and also last week made a development deal for another Twitter feed, "Shh … Don't Tell Steve."
ABC revived its comedy lineup last year with "Modern Family," which concluded its first season with an episode centered around the family taking a portrait that didn't go as planned.
Moses Port and David Guarascio ("Aliens in America," "Just Shoot Me") are writers and executive producers on "Awkward Family Photos." Bender and Chernack are also executive producers. With Joe and Anthony Russo executive producing and directing.
