'Biggest Loser' returns higher; 'Melrose' declines
UPDATED: The two-hour premiere of NBC's "The Biggest Loser" got a plus-sized rating Tuesday night, squashing the finale of Fox's fellow fatty-fat reality show "More to Love."
"Biggest Loser" (9.9 million viewers, 3.8 adults 18-49 rating) was was up a steep 19% in the adult demo last night compared to last fall and easily ranked as the top-rated series of the night.
"Loser" was off 16% from its spring debut, but the opener remains an enviable start for the veteran series, and was possibly aided by the Monday debut of "The Jay Leno Show." Fox's two-hour "More to Love" finale (4.2 million, 1.7) concluded in line with recent episodes.
Over on CBS, the network's two-hour "Big Brother" finale (7.8 million, 2.8) got underway at 9 p.m. and ended strong -- up 4% compared to last season. The latter hour of "Brother" was topped by the second episode of "The Jay Leno Show," which continued to dominate 10 p.m. despite a ratings drop (Tuesday night's Leno ratings are posted separately here).
The CW aired Week 2 of "90210" (2.3 million, 1.2) and "Melrose Place" (1.8 million, 1.0). Though "90210" admirably managed to hold its premiere rating despite this week's increased competition, "Melrose" declined 23% in the adult demo.
On ABC, "Shaq Vs." (4.4 million, 1.7) ended on a stronger note, up 13% for an episode where Shaq swam against Michael Phelps. At 10 p.m., a Barbara Walters Special on Patrick Swayze (6.2 million, 1.9) performed solidly.
Overall: NBC won, followed by CBS, Fox, ABC and the CW.
