'Defenders,' 'LOLA' fall, struggling 'Whole Truth' rises
UPDATED: Several new shows made potentially significant moves in the ratings Wednesday night: ABC's struggling drama "The Whole Truth" improved for the first time, while rivals CBS' "The Defenders" and NBC's "Law & Order: Los Angeles" slipped. While ABC's new comedy "Better With You" may have just earned itself a pickup.
CBS and Fox tied to win the evening. Fox's two-hour "Hell's Kitchen" (6.6 million viewers, 3.2 adults 18-49 rating) was up about 10%.
CBS' "Survivor" (12.1 million, 3.6) climbed 3% and "Criminal Minds" (13.9 million, 3.5) fell 3%. At 10 p.m. "The Defenders" (9.4 million 2.1) was down 16% and CBS' lowest-rated telecast in this time period since 2003. (In some respects, that statistic is actually quite impressive since a 2.1 isn't all that low).
ABC's comedy block: "The Middle" (8 million, 2.5) was down a tenth, new comedy "Better With You" (6.9 million, 2.3) perked up a tenth, "Modern Family" (11.4 million, 4.6) was on par and "Cougar Town" (7.1 million, 3.0) rose 7%. The one to watch here is "Better With You."
Last week, ABC decided to give "The Whole Truth" (4.4 million, 1.3) one more chance. This number is still too low, but the legal drama may have just stayed its execution another week by reversing its downtrend to bounce up 8%.
In fourth, NBC's "Undercovers" (6.4 million, 1.5) went deeper into the mire, down another tenth. NBC plans to keep the show where it is for another week. "Law & Order: SVU" (8.7 million, 2.6) slipped about 8%. "Law & Order: Los Angeles" (8.3 million, 2.4) had a rough second week, falling 25% in the demo and slipping a notch below its veteran "SVU" lead-in. Still, "LOLA" was the top-rated show at 10 p.m.
The CW had "America's Next Top Model" (2.8 million, 1.3) and "Hellcats" (2.1 million, 0.9), the latter going down 25% in the demo.
