Fake police jetpacks story dupes news net
6:31 AM PST 11/30/2010 by James Hibberd
Fox News briefly fell for a fake news story Tuesday about Los Angeles looking to spend $1 billion on jetpacks for its police force, the Huffington Post reported Wednesday.
The hosts fell for a claim that the City of Los Angeles purchased 10,000 (!!!) jetpacks at the cost of $100,000 each for officers and police, fire and paramedics.
The hosts of "Fox and Friends" seemed somewhat skeptical about the story and retracted the report within an hour, the blog said.
Gawker suggested the report probably originated from a story in the Weekly World News, the tongue-in-cheek publication behind such characters as Bat Boy.
