Sources: 'American Idol' has signed Tyler
UPDATED: Sources say Steven Tyler has inked his "American Idol" deal.
Fox isn't commenting.
As with all things "Idol, we remain wary until there's an official announcement since the hiring process has been chaotic and full of media switchbacks.
But this marks the first time THR has reported an "Idol" judging panel candidate is locked, with two sources near the talks saying Tyler has signed.
Fox's mantra with regards to "Idol" judging stories is that no "no deals are signed." When called about Tyler yesterday afternoon, the network had no comment.
TV industry circles have wondered if the 62-year-old rock star will be a good fit for the pop singing competition targeting adults 18-49. The Aerosmith singer does, however, bring a major well-known music industry star name to the panel, which has been one of Fox's goals in rebooting the show. He is expected to join the production in time for the judges hitting the audition trail next month.
Tyler asked for considerably less money than fellow judges panel candidate Jennifer Lopez, whose "north of $20 million" demands THR first reported last week. We also previously noted that, contrary to one report saying she was out of the running, that Fox was still intent on making a deal with Lopez.
The most recent word on Lopez is that Fox has, once again, "moved on" from the singer, possibly to country star Shania Twain, who is reportedly in talks for the gig.
Longtime judge Randy Jackson is still considered to be a lock to continue on the show.
UPDATE: Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton says Tyler's deal is done:
"Steven is doing `American Idol.' The ink is dry on that. So, we'll have to work around his schedule for a new record ... Steven is someone who absolutely lives to be in front of an audience, and the people closest to him know how witty and entertaining he can be. I don't know if `American Idol' will be rock 'n' roll enough for him, but it is an opportunity for millions of people to see another side of Steven Tyler."
Well, that's it folks. Fox may be silent, but the bassist has spoken.
