SUNDANCE: New Wave Films Picks Up U.K. Rights to 'The Nine Muses'

John Akomfrah’s poetic documentary is playing in the festivals New Frontiers section.

New Wave Films has picked up U.K. theatrical distribution rights to John Akomfrah’s The Nine Muses.

A New Frontiers selection, Muses had its North American premiere at the Yarrow Hotel Theatre Friday morning. The film has already played at the Venice, London and Dubai film festivals.

Akomfrah’s film takes a fable-like documentary approach to post-World War II mass migration to England by using Homer’s The Odyssey as narrative inspiration. The film is divided into nine musical chapters augmented by the writings of Dante, Samuel Beckett, Emily Dickinson, James Joyce, John Milton, Sophocles and Dylan Thomas.

Robert Beesom and Pam Engel of New Wave negotiated the deal with David Lawson and Lina Gopaul of Smoking Dogs and Krysanne Katsoolis of Cactus Three.

U.S. distributors have also shown interest, but no deal has yet materialized.

New Wave Films most recently released the Festival de Cannes Palme d'Or winner Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, from filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul.
