Get a first look at the cover for the sequel to Pennyroyal Academy, the hit middle-grade fantasy series from My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic writer M.A. Larson.

The Shadow Cadets of Pennyroyal Academy picks up where book one left off. Evie returns to Pennyroyal Academy, where princesses and knights train to fight witches and dragons for her second year. She witnesses an attack by what appears to be other cadets, but Headmistress General Princess Beatrice is skeptical. Soon Evie learns that a secret society threatens the very existence of the Academy. She and her friends are the only ones who can save their beloved school.

Shadow Cadets goes on sale June 14.

Pennyroyal Academy was the first official project optioned by the then-new Pacific Standard, the production banner started by Reese Witherspoon and Bruna Papandrea. They were eyeing Pennyroyal as a possible franchise with Witherspoon potentially appearing in a supporting role.

“Finally, there is a princess story that reflects the values young women truly want to embody,” Witherspoon said at the time.“These princesses are strong, independent and fierce, and the knights are their match. In telling their story, Larson has created a magical universe that everyone will love to get lost in." She also blurbed the book: “No one rescues Pennyroyal princesses; they rescue themselves.” Chloe Grace Moretz is a fan as well, having Instagrammed about the book.

Larson, who got his start as famed director Mike Nichols' assistant, has been a writer for shows on the Cartoon Network, Disney XD, Nickelodeon and Discovery Kids. He is best known for his work on My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, which inspired the “brony” fandom.
