AMAs: One Direction, Iggy Azalea, Selena Gomez Top Social Moments
Who won the American Music Awards, according to social media?
Twitter chatter was dominated by Iggy Azalea's first performance. When the rapper took the stage with Charli XCX for their hit "Fancy" in a pair of power suits, as though at a press conference, complete with paparazzi-dressed dancers, and later swapping into a metallic jumpsuit for "Beg For It" among silver monkey bars, she triggered the most tweets per minute. She later closed the show with "Booty" alongside Jennifer Lopez.
Azalea's performance was followed by One Direction's second win of the night for pop/rock album (which was introduced by Jenny McCarthy teasing husband Donnie Wahlberg about winning the category's award 25 years ago, and even showed off a vintage photo and said, "That's right — I married that guy!"), as well as Sam Smith's big win of favorite male artist — pop/rock. "Last year I wrote an album about being lonely, and tonight, I couldn't feel further from lonely," he told the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live audience upon accepting the award.
Throughout the broadcast, the most mentioned artists on Twitter were three-time winner One Direction, opening performer and Dick Clark Award for Excellence honoree Taylor Swift, New Artist of the Year winner 5 Seconds of Summer and two-time winner and performer Azalea.
On Shazam, the most popular performance of the night was One Direction's "Night Changes," with 52,000 Shazams. The British boy band was followed by Selena Gomez's emotional television debut of "The Heart Wants What It Wants" (45,000 Shazams), Imagine Dragons' laser-filled debut of "I Bet My Life" (36K Shazams), Pitbull's double-header of "Fireball" and "Time of Our Lives" with Ne-Yo (29.5K Shazams), and Sam Smith's performance of "I'm Not the Only One" with A$AP Rocky (28K Shazams).
