Bjork Selling Pussy Riot T-Shirts in Support of Jailed Russian Protestors
The avant-garde pop star is upping her support of the three women who were imprisoned for an anti-Putin performance in a Moscow church.
Bjork has not forgotten Pussy Riot.
Three women from the Russian punk group were sentenced to two years in jail earlier this month, convicted of hooliganism for a guerilla performance in Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Saviour that protested Russian President Vladimir Putin. With their legal battle ongoing -- the Russian government is pursuing the band's other members -- Bjork is taking her public support to the next level, selling t-shirts featuring the band's logo on her website.
The proceeds -- the shirts retail for 20 pounds, or about $31.62 -- go to the band's legal defense fund.
The fundraiser is the next evolution of the singer's support for the women; earlier in the month, Bjork posted a message on her site voicing her objection to the Russian government's prosecution of the band, and invited the then-on trial women to sing her human rights anthem, "Declare Independence," with her on stage.
"In my opinion," Bjork wrote, "the Russian authorities should let them go home to their families and children."
Along with Bjork, Madonna and Paul McCartney voiced their support for Pussy Riot in statements and live dedications.
