Foo Fighters' 'The Pretender' Gets the Trance Treatment (Exclusive Audio)
Israeli psytrance vets Infected Mushroom talk to THR about why they chose the beloved rock band to tribute and how they fit into today's EDM scene.
In 1997, Erez Eisen and Amit Duvdevani, AKA “Duvdev,” combined forces in Haifa, Israel to form the internationally renowned group Infected Mushroom. Together, they helped pioneer psychedelic trance in the electronic dance music scene and and also remixed multiple tracks from legendary bands like L.A.'s The Doors.
Their latest homage? Rock heroes the Foo Fighters whose 2007 hit "The Pretender" gets the drum and bass treatment on Infected Mushroom's new album Army of Mushroom, out May 8 (listen to the track at the top of this post).
“Slowly, the Foo Fighters grew on me and 'The Pretender' was a big song that me and Erez really like,” says Duvdev of the cover. The Foos song actually has the same BPM as a typical drum and bass track -- 174 -- making it a perfect fit for a twist on the original.
STORY: How Electronic Music Moved the Masses in 2011
The psychedelic trance group has gone through many incarnations over the last 14 years including the addition of guitarists Thomas Cunningham and Erez Netz and percussionist Rogério Jardim. The 2012 tour will kick off with the album release party at Avalon in Hollywood, Calif., and “the unveiling” of the massive stage production that only allows enough room for two.
“There is a huge structure on stage that we're in, so there’s no place for the drummer and guitarists -- that's why we shifted the whole live show to a more electronic oriented show,” says Duvdev of the 2012 trek. “It’s the most crazy thing you will see in the near future.”
