Gotye Crafts Elaborate 'Somebody That I Used to Know' Mashup (Video)
“I couldn't resist the massive remixability that such a large, varied yet connected bundle of source material offered," the singer wrote of the dozens of covers he used to create the piece.
The Belgian-born Australian musician painstakingly remixed dozens of covers of his most popular song into “Somebodies: A YouTube Orchestra,” a mashup video that could be the cover to end all covers.
“Reluctant as I am to add to the mountain of interpretations of Somebody That I Used To Know seemingly taking over their own area of the internet, I couldn't resist the massive remixability that such a large, varied yet connected bundle of source material offered,” Gotye wrote on his YouTube page.
To create the mix, he added no extra instruments, but did utilize “EQ, filtering, pitch-shifting and time-stretching” tools to make it all fit together.
Even though the musician appears to have a complicated relationship with “Somebody That I Used to Know” (in April he criticized Glee's cover of it, and also said he was somewhat sick of the song), he apparently has a soft spot for the large crop of YouTube covers that have popped up.
“Thankyou to everyone who has responded to Somebody That I Used To Know via YouTube,” he wrote. “It's truly amazing!
