Kurt Cobain's Ex-Girlfriend Blasts Courtney Love in Bizarre Pet-Death Dispute
If you're going to cover the band Big Star, do it from a place of honesty, singer Mary Lou Lord demanded on her Facebook page after hearing Courtney Love's rendition of the song "Thirteen" on YouTube.
Lord and Love go back -- both were in relationships with Kurt Cobain, whom the former dated in his pre-fame days -- and in a long series of Facebook posts that ended Oct. 9, an enraged Lord took Love to task for her seemingly lazy cover of the beloved 1972 ballad, writing, "It was crap because it wasn't HONEST. She didn't even know the words."
Lord, who has recorded with the likes of Elliott Smith, Shawn Colvin and Roger McGuinn, also took the opportunity to deny that she had ever murdered Cobain's and Love's cat.
"I also feel that I have the right to call them like I see/hear them with this woman," Lord posted. "There were many times she slammed the shit out of me in public for apparently no reason, saying things that were untrue....One of which was (and this is just SICK thinking in itself), that I had killed the family cat. She said that I had snuck onto their porch (she and Kurt's porch), and killed the cat by sticking a syringe in its eye and breaking its neck!"
"Many of her stupid salivating followers actually believed her, which caused me to have to shake off her sick sycophants who would give me endless amounts of shit and stalk me...I've never said mean things about her-nor do I really give a shit. But this performance brought my claws out and I must say, gave me pleasure at the same time...knowing that she's now finally reached the apex of total crapola."
Lord added that Love herself was accused of inadvertent cat slaughter (in Maer Roshan's book Courtney Comes Clean, which attributes the charge to Love's daughter Frances Bean Cobain). "I think it's ironic how 2 yrs ago or so [Love's] cat was killed by getting strangled in her closet of clothes. The poor animal got caught in the stringy and delicate etsy shawls, and all the dangling do-dads in her closet."
Love has said that she can spend six figures a year on Etsy items.
"Also," Lord continued, "the family dog was killed by accidentally eating the pills on the floor...This shit, I DID NOT make up. I've held back SO many thoughts on this bitch over the years that I deserve a reward. And I suppose that my little reward is in the KNOWING that this woman just plainly SUCKS in so many ways, on so many levels. Just sayin."

So why did Lord wait until now to speak out against Love? As Lord explained: "Back then I was frozen with fear and was made to feel like a victim of something I never did. I was constantly stalked by her sick followers...it really hurt back then, and now it's just weird. If I had known back then that she would wind up sucking and fucked up like she is/does now, and that she would be SO hated among SO many, it would have been helpful."
As for Kurt Cobain, writes Lord, "I would have loved to have been his friend at the very least. I was waiting that marriage out which I assumed at some point would deteriorate. But I also knew that it never would have been an easy thing for him to do. He cared about his child, and I think he wanted more than anything in the world to make it work and to have a family. It was plagued by the start. But all that being said..I suppose what's most important, and what would have been important to him, is his child. She seems like she's happy and very well adjusted-all things considered. That's all that is important at the end of the day."
When others on Facebook criticized Lord for bashing Love, Lord wrote, "Try being a musician sometime and someone on the other end of Courtney Love's wrath at some point, and maybe you would get it. I'm done here."
Courtney Love did not respond to THR's request for comment, but she may soon have her say. A memoir by the singer is due out by HarperCollins this winter.
