The singer, who was born Aug. 16, 1958, has been putting out hits since she first charted on Billboard's Hot 100 with "Holiday" on Oct. 29, 1983.In fact, with her 38 top 10 hits, she has had more top 10s than any other artist in the 54-year history of the chart, according to Billboard. (The Beatles are second, with 34 top 10 songs.)

Overall, Madonna has sold more than 300 million records, and Guinness World Records recognizes her as the world's top-selling female recording artist ever.

She is currently touring in support of her 12th studio album, MDNA, which was released in March.

In honor of her birthday, The Hollywood Reporter takes a look at her five biggest hits as ranked by Billboard, which looked at the actual performance of each of her hits on the weekly Hot 100 to arrive at its rankings.

1. "Like a Virgin"

Madonna's first No. 1 hit was the lead single from her 1984 album of the same name. It spent six weeks atop the Hot 100. The singer memorably performed it at the 1984 MTV Video Music Awards wearing a wedding dress and veil -- along with her infamous "Boy Toy" belt buckle -- first appearing on a giant wedding cake and later rolling around on the stage. 2. "Vogue"

The song, initially planned as the B-side of "Keep It Together," is from I'm Breathless, the soundtrack album to 1990's Dick Tracy, in which Madonna starred opposite Warren Beatty. The video was nominated for nine VMAs, including video of the year, and won three. Watch the video, which was directed by David Fincher, below.

3. "Crazy for You"

The song -- from the soundtrack album for Vision Quest, in which Madonna had a small role -- became Madonna's second No. 1 single, behind "Like a Virgin." The single actually spent three weeks at No. 2 before bumping "We Are the World" out of the top spot. Watch the video below.

4. "Take a Bow"

From the 1994 album Bedtime Stories, the song spent more weeks at No. 1 -- seven -- than any other Madonna single. The song gave Madonna her first No. 1 chart since 1992's "This Used to Be My Playground," while the video -- which sees Madonna as the neglected lover of a bullfighter, played by real-life bullfighter Emilio Munoz -- won best female video at the MTV Video Music Awards in 1995. 5. "Justify My Love"

"Justify My Love" was one of two new songs -- along with "Rescue Me" -- included on Madonna's first greatest-hits album, The Immaculate Collection, released in 1990. The video was deemed so racy that MTV declined to air it, so Madonna decided to sell it as the first-ever commercially available video single.
