Michelle Shocked Stages Sit-In to Protest Concert Cancellation
The singer, under fire for her allegedly anti-gay comments at a recent show, appears outside a Santa Cruz, Calif., music venue wearing a ski mask and tape over her mouth.
Even though her concert was scrapped because of her recent allegedly anti-gay comments, Michelle Shocked still showed up outside Moe's Alley, a music venue in Santa Cruz, Calif., to protest the cancellation, The Associated Press reports.
For the sit-on, staged Thursday, Shocked shrouded her face in what appeared to be a white ski mask, adding black sunglasses to accessorize and covering her mouth with tape that read: "Silenced by Fear." The beleaguered indie-folk singer played her guitar and invited onlookers to write messages with marker on her paper-thin white jumpsuit (she wore clothes underneath).
The owner of Moe's Alley, who booked the bands Beaver Fever and Frootie Flavors to replace Shocked, told the AP: "We will not be bashing Michelle Shocked. Rather we will celebrate music, diversity and send some healing Santa Cruz energy her way."
Earlier this month, Shocked appeared to have a meltdown onstage at a concert in San Francisco, leading stunned audience members, most of whom walked out, to surmise that she apparently believes gay marriage would precipitate biblical end times. (Read: the damning audio transcript.)
Moe's joined the other venues on her tour itinerary in canceling her planned show. Last Friday, she tweeted that she would be appearing at the club McCabe’s in Santa Monica the next night for a "speaking engagement" on the subject of "Effects of Gay-Bashing on the L.A. Mayoral Race."
But the McCabe's concert director, Lincoln Myerson, who had axed her weekend performance, said: "She is not welcome [at the venue]."
"Had Michelle attempted to talk to me [about taking part in some kind of nonmusical forum], I might have attempted to work something out with her." Myerson said. "But for her to go rogue on this shows that she’s her own sheriff. If she wants to do it at the park down the street, she can do it there, but she can’t do it at McCabe’s. I’m not intending to clean up this mess for her. I wish I could get on and tweet, ‘Hey, it’s at her house -- here’s her address.'"
