One Direction Returning With New Album in November
First single, 'Live While We're Young,' hits iTunes on October 1.
One Direction's debut album Up All Night, which spawned the hits "What Makes You Beautiful" and "One Thing," was released less than six months ago, but the UK vocal group is already moving on to its second full-length. A new One Direction album is slated to be released in November through Syco/Sony Music, with a new single, "Live While We're Young," arriving on Oct. 1.
According to a press release, the as-yet-untitled sophomore album features production from pop superstars like Dr. Luke, Shellback and Toby Gad, as well as input from Ed Sheeran and McFly frontman Tom Fletcher. Songwriters Savan Kotecha and Rami Yacoub & Carl Falk, who helmed both "What Makes You Beautiful" and "One Thing," were responsible for "Live While We're Young."
Following their 2010 formation of the UK version of The X Factor, One Direction -- made up of Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Harry Styles -- scored a No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200 chart when Up All Night bowed with 176,000 copies sold in March, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The debut marked the first time a UK group started at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 with its debut album.
With 1.1 million copies sold, Up All Night is currently the year's second-biggest selling album in the U.S., behind Adele's blockbuster 21, which has moved 3.9 million copies this year. Meanwhile, "What Makes You Beautiful" is 2012's seventh-largest selling digital song, with 3.3 million downloads.
After wrapping up a U.S. tour in July, One Direction is slated to headline a handful of stateside shows at the end of the year, including a performance at New York's Madison Square Garden on Dec. 3. Part of the group's 2013 world tour has already been announced, with a 25-city run through the U.S. scheduled to kick off on June 13, 2013 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. and wrap up on Aug. 7 in Los Angeles.
