Paul Thomas Anderson, Fiona Apple Reunite for 'Hot Knife' Music Video
The filmmaker returns to the medium for the first time in 11 years, marking the duo's fifth collaboration.
Paul Thomas Anderson, the acclaimed director of There Will Be Blood and The Master, is returning to music videos after more than a decade, joining forces once again with alternative music icon Fiona Apple.
The video for "Hot Knife," the 10th and final track off Apple's latest album, The Idler Wheel…, is artfully shot, using both black-and-white and color film, along with multiple split-screens. It features Apple drumming along to the song, as both she and fellow songstress Maude Maggart provide vocals.
"Hot Knife" is Anderson's first music video in 11 years.
This is Anderson's fifth time directing a music video for Apple, who was at one time romantically involved with the Oscar nominee. (Anderson is now happily married to actress Maya Rudolph.) The duo's previous collaborations include “Paper Bag,” “Limp,” and “Fast as You Can,” as well as her cover of "Across the Universe."
Apple has also worked with director Mark Romanek (Never Let Me Go) on the video for her 1996 hit "Criminal."
Released last June, The Idler Wheel… is Apple's fourth studio album. It entered the Billboard 200 at No. 3 and debuted at No. 1 on the Alternative Albums and Rock Albums charts.
Anderson is currently filming the Thomas Pynchon adaptation Inherent Vice.
