Postal Service Auditions, as Imagined by Funny Or Die (Video)
A star-studded clip features Moby, Weird Al Yankovic, Aimee Mann, Blink 182's Tom DeLonge and many others trying their hand at the band's tender compositions.
A decade after its debut release, the beloved Postal Service project of Jimmy Tamborello and Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard is experiencing a renaissance of buzz: The groups's Give Up album received platinum-sales honors in late 2012, and now a re-release featuring unheard tracks is due out next month.
Perhaps more exciting, the band has announced plans to reunite for a performance at Coachella and a lengthy summer tour. All this good news was enough to inspire the jokesters at Funny or Die to wonder, what if Gibbard never joined the band?
A new video on the comedy website offers some devastating alternatives, teasing, "Sub Pop Records held auditions in 2002 to fill out the rest of Postal Service. Before today, these auditions had never been seen by the public."
What follows is a star-studded montage featuring Moby, Weird Al Yankovic, Foo Fighters' Nate Mendel, Guns N' Roses' Duff McKagan, Aimee Mann, Blink 182's Tom DeLonge and many others giving the band's tender computer compositions their best shot. Naturally, no one but Gibbard has the magic touch.
Nevertheless, bonus points go to Moby for leaving it all on the field.
