Postal Service's 'Give Up' Goes Platinum Just in Time for Album's 10th Anniversary
It's only the second release in Sub Pop Records history to sell more than one million copies.
Indie pioneers Sub Pop Records announced this week that The Postal Service's 2003 album, Give Up, has gone platinum, certifying sales of over one million copies. It's only the second release from the Seattle-based label to receive the honor.
The long-distance collaboration between Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello (who also records under the names James Figurine and Dntel) took shape as the two sent music back and forth between California and Washington, and prominently features such guests as Jenny Lewis from Rilo Kiley and Seattle singer Jen Wood along with Gibbard's lead vocals.
In 2003, Give Up peaked at No. 114 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart behind the single “Such Great Heights” but grew to become an incredible indie-pop success story, helping propel sales of the Garden State soundtrack the following year and paving the way for Death Cab's massive 2005 radio hit "Soul Meets Body."
According to the latest sales report, Give Up has sold 1,067,087 units. It is is the second best-selling album in Sub Pop's 24-year history, behind Nirvana's 1989 studio debut Bleach, which has moved 1.8 million copies since 1991, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
On Feb. 19, 2013, the album will mark its tenth anniversary.
