Reps: Peter Murphy Blew a .01 At DUI Arrest
The singer's scheduled tour of Bauhaus material will continue as planned.
Representatives of Peter Murphy, the lead singer of goth trailblazers Bauhaus, have spoken out on the musician's Facebook page about his hit-and-run arrest in Glendale on Saturday night.
Murphy, 55, was driving a Subaru Forester when he reportedly rear-ended a Mercedes shortly before midnight, then fled the scene on the Ventura Freeway. A pickup truck driver on the freeway then noticed the singer's erratic driving and followed him off the freeway and into Los Angeles, where he boxed in Murphy's car with his own vehicle and called for police. He was arrested at the scene and charged with DUI, hit and run and drug possession charges.
According to the Facebook posting, the amount of alcohol found in Murphy's bloodstream was measured at 0.01 percent, a full 0.07 percent beneath the legal limit. Murphy told police at the time of his arrest that was "jet-lagged and had taken pills for depression."
"This is the lowest amount of alcohol that is able to register on a breathalyzer," the posting reads.
Nothing was mentioned of a small bag of drugs, suspected of containing methamphetamine, that Glendale Police reported finding on Murphy during his arrest. Officers said they suspected the singer was trying to ditch the bag in the back seat of a cruiser before they could find it.
His handlers add that Murphy's charges have been downgraded from felonies to misdemeanors and that the singer, who pled not guilty to all charges, has been "released with no bail or restrictions." Prior to his Tuesday hearing, he was being held in custody in lieu of posting $500,000 bail.
Murphy will perform all dates as planned on his upcoming solo tour of North America, scheduled in April and May. He then heads to Europe for one month of shows before returning to the U.S. in July for more shows, wrapping up at the Fonda in Hollywood on July 27. The tour will feature Bauhaus music exclusively.
