Rick Rubin Says He's Working on Kanye West's Seventh Album
The producer previously worked with West on "Yeezus," the rapper’s sixth studio effort.
Producer Rick Rubin has confirmed that he’s working with Kanye West on the rapper’s follow-up album to 2013’s Yeezus, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
Rubin told BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe that he’s currently "looking at vocal ideas" for West’s new album, according to NME. The interview was part of a four-part broadcast that will begin on June 16.
Rubin previously worked with West on Yeezus, the rapper’s sixth studio effort. Last June, the producer said there was a possibility that West would release a second installment of Yeezus. In a career-spanning interview for Newsweek's Daily Beast, Rubin explained that when West sought his help in completing Yeezus -- roughly five weeks prior to its scheduled release date -- he'd planned on including 16 tracks.
Rubin countered, "Maybe you should make it more concise. Maybe it is two albums. Maybe this is just the first half." According to Rubin, West took to this idea with enthusiasm, leading to the final version of Yeezus containing just 10 songs.
There’s still no official word yet on when West might release his new album. But only months after the release of Yeezus in June 2013, Q-Tip noted that he and Rubin would be producing West’s follow-up release.
Here’s everything Billboard knows so far about West's upcoming release.
