'The Artist' Earns BAFTA Nominations for Best Costume, Hair and Makeup
The newcomers sneak into the BAFTA race for both categories, but face heavy competition from established nominees.
The British American Film and Television Association has announced their short list of costume, hair and makeup nominees for the BAFTA Orange Awards, to be held on Feb. 12.
The Costume Design list includes the costumes in The Artist, designed by Mark Bridges and Sandy Powell for her work in Martin Scorsese's fanciful Hugo. It's worth mentioning that The Artist, a silent film, has 12 BAFTA nominations, incuding Best Film, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Both stars -- Berenice Bejo and Jean Dujardin -- are in the running for Best Actress and Best Actor.

Jane Eyre's acclaimed costume designer Michael O'Connor also made the BAFTA list for his period costumes. My Week with Marilyn’s Jill Taylor, who recreated Marilyn Monroe's on and off-screen costumes, and Jacqueline Durran, responsible for the subtle suitings in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and who was nominated for a BAFTA for Atonement, finish off the nominations.
What's interesting is that none of these films are big, showy over-the-top costume dramas but are instead subtle, quiet, historically accurate costume contributions that aid the actors in becoming their characters and telling the story. They do not shout BIG IMPORTANT COSTUME HERE! Far from it. They're such good costumes that you hardly notice them. That's great costume design.
The Make Up & Hair BAFTA nominations are for: Again, The Artist, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, Hugo, The Iron Lady starring Meryl Streep who was transformed into a spot-on Margaret Thatcher, and My Week with Marilyn, starring Michelle Williams, who won a Golden Globe for her performance this week.
Some critics say the BAFTA noms may indicate the way the Academy Award nominations will go. Or they may not. Only time will tell.
Congrats to everyone!
