Cameron Diaz is definitely trying to raise her fashion profile at the Paris couture shows this week. She was front and center for Donatella Versace’s Mount Olympus-inspired Spring/Summer collection. Thankfully, she had smoothed out her controversial Golden Globes bedhead hairdo. Also on hand, actress Diane Kruger, who has been a regular at the Paris shows for years.
“I loved it. It was so sexy, so typically Versace. I’m looking myself to see if I can get one,” Kruger said after the Versace show. Kruger will soon start filming The Host, based on the novel by Twilight author Stephenie Meyer. She will play a villain named The Seeker, opposite Saoirse Ronan who plays a young rebel soldier and an extraterrestrial named The Wanderer. And you know how a Stephanie Meyer movie can turn an actress into a A-list celebrity overnight.
Diaz also turned up at the Dior show to see the 1950s-themed collection featuring luminous layers of very sheer silk. All eyes were on Dior for this second collection since John Galliano's sudden departure last March. This time, Galliano’s right-hand designer Bill Gaytten’s collection was deemed a winner, although some crtitics found the sheer fabrics a bit too revealing, dubbing it the X-Ray Collection.
"I lost my breath after the first four," Diaz raved after the show. "The fabrics were sexy and feminine." Leonardo DiCaprio’s ex Bar Refaeli was also there. The model/actresses were wearing the designer’s duds to their shows so they could be walking billboards while they gave their soundbites of praise about the collections to journalists covering the shows. Hey, if a designer flew you for free to Paris, put you up in a fabulous free five star hotel, wined and dined you, showered you with flowers, and gave you free clothes, you’d praise them too.
The couture collection week has only just begun. It will be interesting to see who shows up at which show. These appearances usually signal a budding “relationship” between celebrities and the designers, and may influence what they wear on important upcoming red carpets, like say, oh, maybe the Oscars? Stay tuned.
