Cannes 2012: Jane Fonda Sports Stella McCartney's Optical Illusion Gown (Poll)

If there's one actress who doesn't need a tromp l'oeil gown that gives the illusion of an hourglass figure, it's the 73-year-old Fitness Queen.

Jane Fonda wore designer Stella McCartney’s super-slimming “Silhouette” gown at the premiere of De Rouille et D’os at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday. The gown is from McCartney's new evening collection.

She looked incredible in the B&W optical illusion gown that gives the amusing appearance of a perfectly proportioned hourglass figure. At least from the front. But then so did Kate Winslet, who wore the shorter version at the 2011 Venice Film Festival. See also: Liv Tyler, Nicole Scherzinger and someone called La La Anthony.

The dress works a bit like a girdle, and, in addition, the dark color on the outside fools the eye and makes the wearer's frame look slim and curvy, even if it’s not. The trend reportedly originated when Alexander McQueen and Herve Leger both sent models down their Spring/Summer 2009 catwalks sporting designs that used graphic motifs to create an hourglass shape and waspy waist.

She also sparkled wearing an white gold ring set with emeralds and diamonds and a pair of18k white gold emerald and diamond drop earring, all courtesy of Chopard.

The thing is Ms. Fonda -- a brand ambassador for L'Oreal Paris -- hardly needs any help in the slimming department. The very fit 73-year-old actress and icon got major fashion kudos for her shimmery Atelier Versace gown at the Cannes opening ceremonies -- and she clearly needed no trompe d’oeil tricks to look trim and terrific.
