CFDA Awards 2012: Fashion Industry Fete to be Broadcast for the First Time
The June 4 event, featuring host Seth Meyers and honoree Johnny Depp, will find its way online the next day.
The Council of Fashion Designers annual CFDA Awards will be broadcast, in its entirety, for the first time in history on June 5.
Whoop-de-do, right? Well, yes, it really is a big whoop. This is the 50th anniversary of the awards, Johnny Depp is getting the first Fashion Icon award given to a male and Saturday Night Live head writer and Weekend Update anchor Seth Meyers will be hosting.
But don’t rush to set your DVRs. The show will air on Style.com, one day after the June 4 event at Lincoln Center. Until this year, the show was closed to TV cameras and the news was reported afterwards with only short video clips available online.
Steven Kolb, CEO of the CFDA says, “We are thrilled to be able to share American fashion’s biggest night with the public for the first time and to be working with Style.com on this incredible project. This is an amazing opportunity to expand our audience as we open this exclusive industry event to fashion lovers around the world."
THR predicts that, just like the Met Museum’s Costume Institute Gala, live streamed this year on the Met’s website, there will be gobs of celebrities wearing gorgeous designer ensembles at the big event and on the red carpet.
Last year Lady Gaga was the big draw. Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen were on hand, and so were Kanye West, Kristen Dunst, Gerard Butler, Sofia Coppola, Ashley Greene, Jessica Alba, Kathy Griffin, L'Wren Scott, Anderson Cooper, LA's own fashion star Cameron Silver, Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington, Tory Burch, Rachey Roy, Joy Bryant and Marcia Cross.
Fash Track's old pal Tim Blanks (we were in the New York and Paris Fashion Week trenches for a decade) will be the anchor for the carpet arrivals. Lexus and Swarovski are sponsors of the broadcast and the awards.
We just can't wait to see what Johnny Depp, now an official member of the Comanche nation, will wear to win his prize -- and what Meyers will say about his outfit.
