Charlize Theron Shaves Her Head: 'Mad Max: Fury Road' Star Reveals Bold New Look
The Oscar-winning actress follows in the footsteps of Sigourney Weaver, Natalie Portman and Demi Moore, who have all parted with locks for film roles.
South African-born actress Charlize Theron was spotted in Namibia this week with her recently adopted son. She's due to start filming Mad Max: Fury Road any day now in the African country where Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt adopted their daughter, Zahara.
And Charlize has finally been photographed hatless, revealing her dramatic buzz cut to fans, in a photo that is making the rounds on Twitter.
The shorn 36-year-old actress and her son Jackson sported matching red tops as they were spotted whizzing through the city.
Charlize chopped off her long blonde locks earlier this month to play the character called Furiosa in Fury Road, the fourth film in the post apocalyptic series, that initially launched the career of Mel Gibson.
And she follows in a line of talented actresses who have shaved their heads for film roles, including Sigourney Weaver (Alien 3), Natalie Portman, (V for Vendetta) and Cate Blanchett (Heaven) and Demi Moore (G.I. Jane). Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon recently shaved off her strawberry locks for the Broadway production of Wit.
This isn't the first time Theron has transformed herself. She won an Oscar for her pivotal role in the 2003 film Monster, playing the female serial killer Aileen Wuornos. She gained 30 pounds, and wore prosthetic crooked teeth and makeup that made her look weathered.
Theron will star opposite Tom Hardy, who takes on the role made famous by Gibson. And she's already chomping at the bit to start filming.
"I feel like the original Mad Max created such a vivid world, that to go back and re-imagine it and kind of replay in that sandbox sounds like fun to me," she's told press. "George Miller really created a strong female character that I've never read anything like this. I mean, I'm scared s---less!"
She added: 'I'm very excited about it; I'm f---cking dying! It's been three years; it's time to skin this cat already!'
