How Chloe Sevigny Used Prosthetics to Play a Transgender Killer
Miu Miu's new brand ambassador also scoffs at her fashion insider status, telling "Out" that she requested 20 dresses for her TV series premiere but only got two.
Miu Miu's new brand ambassador, Chloe Sevigny, is truly multifaceted.
The Golden Globe-winner (Big Love) and Oscar-nominee (Boys Don't Cry) plays a pre-op transsexual killer who discovers that he fathered a child before he transitioned in a new British TV series, Hit & Miss.
The widely praised show premieres in the U.S. on Wednesday, July 11 on DirectTV. And there’s a lot of Sevigny to see in the opening episode, including her prosthetic penis.
"The process to put it on was very involved. I had to shave myself, it’s glued on, painted, like any prosthetic,” Sevigny says in the August issue of Out. ”It’s not fun to have someone right up in your private parts.”
She wasn’t all that comfortable with the prosthetic appendage. But after seeing the finished show, she admits: “Now I can rest assured, because I’ve seen it, and it’s not gratuitous. It shouldn’t be a show about a f--king penis.’”
Besides the wearing of the male member, Sevigny also had to learn to shoot firearms, perfect a British accent, take kickboxing lessons, and do a six-month sabbatical to film in Manchester, England,
She also had to quickly learn the ropes regarding the proper terms to describe her character in the press. Last year she caught flak for describing her role as a “tranny” in an interview with BlackBook magazine.
“I didn’t know you weren’t supposed to use that word,” she tells Out. “There are all these tenses, too. I’m still not even sure if I’m doing it right, and I really don’t want to offend anyone.”
Sevigny is a friend-muse to Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, the designers behind Proenza Schouler, and she also designs for the NY downtown retailer Opening Ceremony. But despite her long-held and well-earned rep as a downtown "Fashion It girl," she makes fun of her insider access.

For the British premiere of Hit & Miss she requested about 20 dresses, but only received two. “Aren’t I one of the top searches on Style.com, for crying out loud?” she dryly noted. “How hard is it to get a fucking dress from Valentino?”
Bet one of the dresses was from Miu Miu.
