One of the great fashion traditions at the Cannes Film Festival is observing what the glamorous female jury member wears day in and night out, as she's on the schedule to attend many of the nighttime galas, daytime movies and a lot of parties squeezed in between (including the famed amfAR ball). Last year, jury member Uma Thurman outdid herself in an array of Chanel, Armani, Roland Mouret and Dolce & Gabbana. This year, we're waiting with bated breath to observe jury member Diane Kruger's wardrobe - since the famed fashionista has no stylist, and is making all the choices herself.
At Monday night's Met Ball in New York, Kruger arrived with much longer hair, worn down and simple, almost no makeup - and an unbelievable Prada gown in deep eggplant with an enormous feather hem. The dress was an interesting combination of simple slip dress on the top, and couture embellishment on the bottom. She was just one of the "in the know" actresses who've come to understand that if you're wearing a very major outstanding dress, you play down your hair and makeup. Scarlett Johansson and Cate Blanchett clearly get it on this new fashion rule.
“I love the color of my gown," Kruger told THR's Erin Carlson. "And it’s so unusual yet a ball gown. I didn’t anticipate the ball gown part, but it’s an experience. … I feel like a princess. It’s very comfortable. But I’m gonna re-think the feathers for the next time.”
She said getting into a car with the dress was tough. “The paparazzi had a good laugh,” she added.
As for Cannes, she’s a juror so she’s currently stockpiling 10 dresses that are “light and airy and flowy” - that was her description. But knowing Kruger, the dresses may be light and airy, but they'll also have rich colors, a great flattering shape and some unusual elements. We're counting the days till Cannes' opening night gala on June 16. And another fashionista will be turning up - Tilda Swinton, who stars in the opening night film, Wes Anderson's Moonlight Kingdom.
