Downton Abbey star Lily James is no stranger to the limelight, having played fashion-forward flapper Lady Rose MacClare on the wildly popular English soap since 2012. But now that the 24 year-old has snagged the starring role in Disney's Kenneth Branagh-helmed live-action version of Cinderella, she's obviously about to become an "it girl." Which also means she's on her way to styling teams, major designer dresses and the conceptual high-fashion Vogue and W spreads that usually come with the territory of these types of things (plus she's starring in the film opposite Cate Blanchet, so there will surely be some major outfits she'll have to stand out against on the press tour).
But a look at James' past red carpet appearances reveal that she's already pretty good at gussying up for events with a simple, classic Old Hollywood-infused style that — while not jaw-dropping — is lovely nonetheless. It will be interesting to see how her look evolves as she becomes a tried-and-true boldfacer. But in the mean time, we found a few pre-princess looks that prove James is well on her way to red carpet hit maker.
In February, James wore a romantic lace frock by Dolce & Gabbana to the British Academy Film Awards. Though the look was more interesting than some of her other choices, she still kept things relatively tame.
The actress chose a glamorous, simple red gown for the British National Television Awards in London in January.
James kept things simple with a gray gown at the Fast Girls premiere in London last June.
