Dress Du Jour: Carey Mulligan’s menswear-inspired cape and no-fuss hairstyle.
The Dress: Or, um, cape and trousers from Victoria Beckham’s fall/winter 2013 collection — which easily stood up to the evening’s most jaw-dropping gowns.
The Wearer: Current Vogue cover girl and Great Gatsby star Carey Mulligan, who was styled by THR's Most Powerful Hollywood Stylists List alum Ryan Hastings.
The Event: Tiffany & Co’s annual Blue Book Ball on April 18, when the company’s most serious collection of diamonds ($500,000 rings, anyone?) were showcased in addition to toasting its collaboration with Gatsby costume designer, Catherine Martin.
The Reason We Dig: Mulligan might look splendid in the drop-waist frocks and ornate headpieces she wears for her role as Daisy Buchanan, but this sleek, minimal look is equally as eye-catching. The overall ensemble is serious without being too severe and combined with her chic blond updo, she channels a younger Cate Blanchett. The cape-and-trouser combo might have fewer bells and whistles than a beaded flapper dress but similarly and stylishly pushes sartorial boundaries much like the women of the Gatsby era.
