'Spider-Man' Costume Designer Eiko Ishioka Dies at 73
She won an Academy Award for "Bram Stoker's Dracula" and a Grammy for the cover design of Miles Davis' "Tutu" album.
Oscar-winning costume designer Eiko Ishioka, who made costumes for Broadway actors, Olympians and big stars like Jennifer Lopez, died in Tokyo at 73.
Studio manager Tracy Roberts said Thursday that Ishioka died of pancreatic cancer, Associated Press reports.
She won an Academy Award in 1992 for best costume design for Bram Stoker's Dracula, directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Ishioka, who won a Grammy Award for the cover design of Miles Davis' Tutu album and directed Bjork's music video for "Vespertine," also designed costumes for Lopez's 2001 film The Cell.
She most recently designed costumes for Broadway's Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. “Her work will continue to touch audiences for years to come,” said Spider-Man producers Michael Cohl and Jeremiah J. Harris said in a joint statement. Thursday’s performance would be dedicated in her memory.
Ishioka also won the artistic contribution prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1985 for Mishima. Additionally, she served as director of costume design for the opening ceremony of the 2008 Summer Olympics and designed wardrobe for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.
In 1992, she was named to the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame and her work can be seen at New York's Museum of Modern Art, among others.
