Emmys 2012: 'Game of Thrones,' 'Borgias,' 'Hemingway' Costume Designers React to Nominations
Several familiar fashion faces were nominated Thursday along with quite a few new ones.
The list of outstanding costume Emmy nods for a miniseries, movie or a special and for a series (two different categories) featured a lot of very familiar faces.
The nominees ranged from HBO’s John Dunne and Lisa Padovani (Boardwalk Empire) and Showtime’s Gabriella Pescucci (The Borgias) -- who took home last year's Emmy -- to HBO’s Michele Clapton (Games of Thrones) and Masterpiece Theatre’s 2011 Downton Abbey Emmy winner Susannah Buxton (she won last year and this was, sadly, her final season of Abbey).

But there was no AMC Mad Men nod for past Emmy winner and multiple nominee Janie Bryant. Instead there’s a nomination for Eduardo Castro for ABC’s new fantasy series Once Upon a Time. Castro has been previously nominated for four Emmys: twice for Ugly Betty, once for Elvis and once for And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself.
A not surprising nod also went to legendary film and TV costume designer Ruth Meyers for her fastidious and beautiful period work on HBO’s Hemingway and Gelhorn.
THR reached Meyers on Emmy morning for her reaction: “I was very aware from the moment I was approached about this film that it was an great honor to be asked to join Phil Kaufman on such a project and one so dear to his heart. To work with Nicole Kidman and Clive Owen is amazing enough, but to be able to contribute to a film about the great Martha Gellhorn has been especially important to me. The level of collaboration on this project, the support of a legendary director, a marvelous crew and HBO’s constant commitment has been tremendous. Being in San Francisco for four months didn't hurt, either.”

HBO's Thrones two-time nominee Clapton exclusively emailed The Hollywood Reporter from Belfast, where she's hard at work on Season three already.
“Thank you! i'm really pleased, and my crew in this corner of Belfast are very excited!" she wrote. "A bit of relief in the heavy work schedule of season 3 that we are in the midst of at the moment!”
Pescucci, who couldn’t get on the phone because she was already on the Borgias set (where it’s supposed to be quiet, remember?) working on the third season, emailed THR with this over-the-moon all-caps reaction.

“THANK YOU, WE ARE ALL VERY HAPPY!! THANK YOU TO EVERYBODY THAT VOTED. IT'S SO NICE TO GET THIS RECOGNITION FOR MY WORK. I WANT TO THANK SHOWTIME, THE PRODUCERS, DIRECTORS AND EVERYONE THAT HAS WORKED WITH ME, AND WITH WHOM I SHARED THIS WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE.”
Other costume designers nominated include Sarah Arthur for Masterpiece’s Sherlock, Karri Hutchinson for History’s Hatfields & McCoys, Annie Symons for Masterpiece’s Great Expectations and Chrisi Karyonides for FX's American Horror Story.
