Triple-digit temperatures have hit Hollywood on the same day as The Primetime Creative Arts Emmys, which get underway shortly at the Nokia Theatre LA Live.
There's not much nominees can do about the sweltering heat at this point, but there are certain worst-case-scenario precautions that can be taken to avoid having their looks melt on the way to the podium.
The Hollywood Reporter has consulted with Hollywood hair and makeup specialist Jose Cantú, a stylist at The Powder Room in Silver Lake, who says that if extreme heat is turning your fabulous 'do into a frizzy disaster, there's an easy fix.
"Make a messy, tight bun high up on the crown of your head [pictured]," Cantú says. "That's always a fierce fashion look on the fly. The best part about it is it goes with anything. You can do it in flip-flops or stilettos. All you need is a rubber band and a bobby pin."
If you have a little more time, then Cantú suggests that "hippie hair" is a great way to deal with pizza-oven temperatures.
"Hippie hair is easy and not too coiffed. It's bohemian chic and a very natural and sexier look. Use a large Enzo hair curling wand to give it big, lazy curls," Cantú says.
He also swears by products by Naturalmente to combat the dreaded frizz: "Their Flower Hair Oil has SPF that protects hair from sunrays as it prevents frizzing. And their Bees Wax is great for controlling flyaways."
As for makeup, it's best to go for a clean and simple face in late summer, when Southern California temperatures can skyrocket: "A fresh face look with a cateye eyeliner and pouty, rosy lip is the best way to go. It's natural but also very elegant. Perfect for this weather," he says.
The key to preventing shine is to keep the makeup light, as it will melt in high heat and look terrible in pictures. Cantú recommends a tinted moisturizer in place of foundation, and suggests the one from Bobbi Brown.
Finally, if you notice you're sweating it up on the red carpet, you need to get to the closest compact and powder that face, pronto. That goes for you, too, fellas.
"If you're a guy, look for a girl who has a compact. And find yourself a [face] mister."
