Fate of Kelly Wearstler's Fashion Line in Question Amid Layoffs
Multiple sources tell THR that the renowned home and hotel designer laid off most of her ready-to-wear staff Monday and is shuttering the line, which the designer disputes.
Kelly Wearstler's hotel designs are design-junky heaven, with Los Angeles' Avalon and the Viceroy, decorated with her infamous eclectic flair and developed with her real estate husband Brad Korzen. She's created great houses for such stars as Gwen Stefani and DreamWorks co-chair/CEO Stacey Snider and even the Bergdorf Cafe at the iconic Bergdorf Goodman in New York. But the fate of the clothing line she began in the spring of 2011 is in question after layoffs Monday, hitting an estimated one-third of the staff.
Multiple sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the line is being shuttered, however the designer, through a spokesperson, disputes that, saying the line will continue. “The ready-to-wear collection has not been canceled and will continue to be available at the Los Angeles flagship and other specialty retailers. We have simply re-focused the collection and, as a result, we have made the difficult decision to streamline our talented and dedicated design team," the spokesperson tells THR.
Insiders say that Wearstler -- and her husband, who co-owns the fashion business -- is refocusing the business around basics like T-shirts and denim, which have been well received by critics. Wearstler's flagship store is located on Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood and also sells her home furnishings.
Her first ready-to-wear collection was introduced in the fall of 2011 and had been four years in the making. Wearstler had recently hired Swedish clothing designer Hampus Bernhoff from the well-known Acne brand in Sweden as creative consultant. It's unknown whether he's staying on.
Wearstler's rep confirms that eight people were laid off, encompassing "two designers and six individuals from areas including production and e-commerce.”
The designer, a former judge on Bravo's Top Design, is the author of the best-selling 2004 design book Modern Glamour.
