New York Giants’ linebacker Greg Jones didn’t just receive a ring with Sunday night’s Super Bowl victory -- he gave one away, too.
Amid his team’s celebration, Jones, 23, took a knee to ask his college sweetheart to be his wife. Amanda “Mandy” Piechowski, 24, tearfully accepted his proposal, donning Super Bowl-appropriate garb including jeans and a blue Giants jersey -- number 53, of course. The entire exchange happened under the blue and red confetti-filled sky, with the cameras rolling.
“She was bawling,” Jones told the NJ Star-Ledger. “I was like, ‘I don’t know how long she’s going to keep crying.’”
The duo met on the Michigan State campus, where Jones played football and Piechowski played basketball. They began dating approximately one year ago, but have known each other for a reported three years.
“She definitely knows how I feel. A speech wasn’t even needed,” said Jones. Asked why he wanted to make her his wife, the athlete added: “Just everything we’ve been through together. She’s been here since Day One and she knew me long before everything else.”
Teammate Mark Herzlich tweeted his congrats to the happy couple, writing, “Congrats to my boy Greg Jones for getting a ring and giving one. #engaged last night!”
