'Girls' Costume Designer Jenn Rogien Spills Her Biggest Style Splurge, Ever
The woman behind Lena Dunham's uncomfortably ironic short-alls tells us about her biggest fashion purchase of all time.
Jenn Rogien, the costume designer for HBO’s hit series, Girls, wore a bright tangy orange Stella McCartney gown – the emerging color to beat this season -- to the Costume Designers Guild Awards earlier this week, which she attended for the first time.
“I went to London to see my friend Mark Bridges’ (Oscar winning costume designer for The Artist) display at the Hollywood Costume Exhibit at the V&A Museum and I took advantage of my time there to do a little shopping,"
She ended up at Harvey Nichols. "That's just not the place to make spontaneous purchases because they come with very large price tags," she admits. "But it was on the sale rack and it was in my size and I put it on and zipped it up and said, “This is it! This is the dress.”
Before she plunked down her credit card, she texted her husband. "I said, ‘ I am putting a large purchase on the credit card. Is that OK?’ and he texted back, ‘Yes, of course’ and ‘I get my new computer, right?"

She got her stunning Stella McCartney gown and her husband, well, he got a new Mac laptop. Fair is fair.
“I have never spent this much money on anything except for maybe rent," admitted Rogien. "Or a new computer.”
Rogien is now the style advisor and fit expert for American Eagle’s Aerie lingerie line. Which works well considering that the female characters on Girls have a penchant for prancing about in their skivvies. And, uh, less.
STORY: 'Weeds Alums Join Netflix's 'Orange is the New Black'
While Girls is on hiatus, Rogien has been working on Netflix’s new series Orange Is The New Black,” based on the memoirs of Piper Kerman about her year in a women’s prison.
"I'm sure that's one of the reasons why I was attracted to this dress. I have to be very judicious about using orange in the flashbacks because that’s the color of the prison uniforms. But it's literally everywhere for spring. It’s such a great color with a little drama and little sass. I’ve actually been calling it blood orange.”
