2nd Annual Golden Collar Awards: Expanded Categories, Amateur Videos, Audience Voting (Exclusive)
A talent search, "American Idol" style voting and a role in a Disney film for a discovered dog will add excitement to next year's show on Feb. 17.
Award season is finally over, which means we're already looking ahead to the 2013 gold race. Already, we've got inside scoop about next year’s hottest award show -- the Second Annual Golden Collar Awards.
Dog News Daily founder/editor Alan Siskind filled us in on all the details at the THR 2012 Nominees Party last week. The 2nd GCAs, which will be held Feb. 17 at the Beverly Hilton, will feature a number of big changes that will help make it a more exciting, publicly engaging event.
The show will add a number of new categories, including Best Dog in a TV Commercial and Amateur Dog, the latter of which will be chosen from videos submitted (10 minutes or less) by owners. Half of the awards categories will be open to popular vote rather than a panel of judges. Think People's Choice and Teen Choice.
There is also talk of a TV Show called Golden Dreams that ties a canine talent search around the country for dogs to participate in a segment of the GCAs during the televised show.
Much like American Idol, viewers will text their votes for their favorite dog and the winner will get a Hollywood package: training by a top Hollywood trainer and get a coveted role in a Disney dog movie. And from there, the sky's the limit for that lucky dog's Hollywood career.
Forget The Voice, this show could be called The Woof.
"We could not be more pleased with the move to the Beverly Hilton and to have the awards just a week before the Oscars," Siskind said. "Next year, it will be much more inclusive and the popular vote will make it more People’s Choice where people can vote in certain categories on the Dog News Daily website."
Siskind admits: “We may not have an Uggie or Martin Scorsese doing our PR for us next year. And there’s not as big a window between the Globes and the Oscars. So we'll have participatory events to draw the audience in. And the nominations will be announced as early as November or early December.”
This year the GCAs got pulled together in less than six weeks and it was a huge and hilarious hit. Can't wait for next year's GCAs with the added Teen Choice and American Idol style voting, and a lot of adorable amateur dog videos.
