Power Shopping: Designer Kimberly Ovitz Talks Style, Fashion Favorites
The clothing designer (loved by Rihanna, Cameron Diaz and Chloe Sevigny, among others) shares her fashion advice and reveals her must-haves.
Clothing designer Kimberly Ovitz -- whose creations can be seen on the likes of fashionable stars such as Rihanna, Olivia Wilde, Cameron Diaz, Monet Mazur (with Ovitz, pictured below) and Rashida Jones, to name a few -- debuted her spring/summer 2013 collection during New York Fashion Week to a packed house Sept. 6.
The native Californian -- her father is CAA co-founder and former Disney president Michael Ovitz -- launched her eponymous label in 2009 using art and architecture as inspirations for her structured pieces, geometric sharp lines and flowing fabrics (think silk and chiffon mixed with rugged materials like distressed faux suede). Ovitz, who finds beauty in simplicity and approaches style with a less-is-more attitude, recently expanded her brand for fall 2012 with a capsule collection: O By Kimberly Ovitz. The eco-friendly line -- made of 100% natural, man-made and sustainable tencel fabric -- features women’s separates in season-less styles that reflect the designer’s main collection, and are all priced under $200.
Despite the success of two clothing lines and dressing various A-listers, Ovitz admits to making a fashion mistake (or two). “I always had fashion mishaps until I was about 25,” she said. “Then I finally figured it out.” Her advice: “Never wear something sheer when someone is taking a shot of you.”
Ovitz talked to The Hollywood Reporter about her style and revealed her fashion faves.
Favorite Designers:
Old-school Rick Owens, Calvin Klein, Ann Demeulemeester, Yohji Yamamoto.
Favorite place to shop:
I don’t really shop. I wear jeans and a T-shirt every day.
Favorite recent purchase:
Since I don’t make accessories yet, I got a super minimal raw edge cut Celine tote as a birthday gift to myself.
Favorite under-the-radar store:
I love a men’s store called Atelier in New York.
Travel must-haves?
The ability to fit everything into a carry on bag, because I don’t like to check my bag.
Favorite red-carpet moment:
I loved when Chloe Sevigny wore my long sleeved mini-dress in nude, back in fall ‘09. That launched the demand for our now signature bodycon dress in different fabrics and colors. Thanks, Chloe!
